Experimenting With The Big Stopper

Lee's 10 stop "big stopper" filter allowed me to photograph the above in broad daylight with a five second exposure time. This exposure time smooths out the motion in the water, giving it a misty effect. Shot at China Camp State Park, San Rafael.

  1. Without the filter, what would have been your shutter speed at ƒ32, ISO50? 1/30 sec?

  2. The big stopper is 10 stops, which let through 1/1000 of light. so a 1/1000 second exposure time would become one second.

I shot that at f7.1, ISO 200 (which is base ISO on the EM-5 unfortunately) at 5 seconds. So f32 ISO 50 would a little over 320 seconds. (I make f32 ISO 50 to be six stops from f8 ISO 200)

  3. Aah - I just re-read your question. Without the big stopper filter the shutter speed would have been about 1/3 second.

I also used a 3 stop hard grad to darken the sky.

    1. Do you have the same shot without the filter? I'm curious to see the difference between the two exposures. It's hard to tell otherwise.
